If you have two weeks, a ladder and some experience, this makes an excellent DIY project. On most surfaces, it is forgiving of mistakes and easy to work with. My house was a 70s build, and almost completely wallpapered with a lot of the wallpaper painted over, which definitely didn’t help in removing it all! I also had a slightly different problem with removing wallpaper – the previous owners had used vinyl wallpaper, which when steamed stretched a lot rather than scraping off easily. It was easier to just score and scrape or peel off the paper dry, and later steam off any papery bits that were left on the wall.
Walls should be wet down before getting scrubbed, then washed with a gallon of water mixed with 1 cup chlorine bleach and 1 cup of either a concentrated, phosphate-free cleaner, such as a trisodium phosphate (TSP) substitute, or Jomax House Cleaner. Working in sections, from the bottom to the top, will avoid streaks. Be sure to rinse walls well before the solution dries.
